Common Errors
-
Lamination Errors: This occurs when foreign materials get trapped under the surface layer of the coin, causing parts of the surface to flake away. Several 1920 wheat pennies have been found with this type of error, making them more valuable.
-
Off-Center Strikes: An off-center strike happens when the coin blank is not properly aligned in the die during the minting process. This results in part of the design being cut off or missing. For example, a 1920 penny struck 5% off-center graded MS-64 red and brown sold for approximately $1,840.
-
Double Die Obverse (DDO): This error occurs when the design is struck more than once, resulting in a doubled image on the obverse side. Look for doubling on the lettering in “Liberty,” “1920,” or Lincoln’s features. Minor DDOs might add $50-$100 to the coin’s value, while major ones could be worth $500-$1,000 or more.
-
Struck on Wrong Planchet: This rare error happens when a 1920 Lincoln Cent is struck on a planchet intended for another coin. Examples include coins struck on a 10-cent planchet, which have sold for thousands of dollars.
-
Die Breaks and Cracks: These errors occur when the die used to strike the coin develops cracks or breaks, which are then transferred to the coin during minting. This can result in unique and collectible pieces.
